LIFE EMPORE at the first convention on micro contaminants in water at the Santiago de Compostela University

Last 13th y 14th of june, “1st Symposium Novedar: Presence and Elimination of Micro contaminants in Water” took place. It was organized by Santiago de Compostela University

LIFE EMPORE, represented by the University Institute of Water and Environments Sciences of the University of Alicante, was present at this convention as a collaborator and rapporteur from the hand of the researcher María de los Ángeles Bernal Romero del Hombre Bueno, who took part in the aforementioned event with the oral presentation “Elimination of micro contaminating agents from WWTP effluents through the combination of membrane processes, advanced oxidation and processes electrochemical.”

At the symposium, the technologies used in the EMPORE project and results of the elimination of micro contaminants obtained in the demonstration period from July to December 2018 were presented. The pretreatment (conventional filtration and ultrafiltration) allowed reducing turbidity and the concentration of suspended solids. The effluent was filtered in the reverse osmosis unit, obtaining a high quality permeate, detecting only AMPA and punctually traces of glyphosate, carbamazepine and diclofenac, from a total of 20 micro contaminants studied. Traces were removed with activated carbon. Electro-oxidation allowed improving the quality of the rejections obtained, being more efficient for compounds such as AMPA and glyphosate.
