What are emerging pollutants?

Every day, industries, agriculture and the general population are using intensively water and releasing chemicals into urban and industrial wastewaters.

Many chemicals, which were not traditionally considered pollutants, are being discovered in water sources continuously because of the advance of the technical analysis. These chemicals, whose effects on environment and human health are unknown, are products without regulatory status. They are generally referred to as Emerging Pollutants.

The effects of these compounds on the environment and human health still remain unknown. These chemical products are not regulated by any law.

Emerging pollutants are becoming an increasing risk due to their permanent discharge, as the actuals WWTPs are not designed for their treatment and removal, their bioaccumulative character and their biomagnification effects for human health and for the environment. All in all, emerging pollutants could be present in drinking water.
